What is Rucking and What Are the Benefits?

Better Than Cardio? How Weighted Vests Hack Your Fitness Biology | The Ultimate Human with Gary Brecka

What Is Rucking?

Rucking is walking for a set distance with a weighted vest or backpack on your back. It started in the military. Soldiers march carrying heavy loads on their backs to train for carrying heavy equipment in the field. Hikers often prepare for long treks in the same way.

Even if you aren’t readying yourself for combat or overnight hiking, rucking can be an excellent full-body workout that strengthens muscles and improves the health of your heart and blood vessels. (WebMD)

Also known as Active Resistance Training (ART), which is part active cardio and part strength training, rucking will burn significantly more calories than walking. With the added benefits of permanent metabolic gains from stronger muscles at a fraction of the cost to your knees, and plenty of benefit to your heart.

Some weighted vests you might want to consider are available on Amazon. I have not tried these nor do I endorse them. You should always do your own research. I purchased the BeatBoost Adjustable Weighted Vest (20 lb) the first link below. I am looking forward to testing it out. I like it because it has removable steel plates to adjust the weight load (instead of bulkier sand or gravel pouches).
