“The body is miraculously designed, containing within a profound set of innate healing mechanisms to keep us healthy and alive. Those healing systems are degraded by our modern diet, environment, and lifestyle, but science is discovering how to activate them. One of the keys to health and longevity is the simple principle that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. When your system is stressed a little but not too much, it responds by becoming stronger and more resilient.
Think exercise. You stress your system by running fast or lifting weights, tearing your muscles, and in the healing process you become stronger. But overexercising can lead to injury. Similarly, a little cold stress and you activate healing; too much, you die of hypothermia. A little overheating repairs damaged proteins and boosts your immune system; too much, you die of heat stroke. The stress of caloric restriction consistently extends life in animal models by a third, or the equivalent of living to 120 years old. You can’t eat so few calories that you will die, but a little starvation activates longevity pathways.
