My father, Randy Clark, was an All-American basketball star at BYU. He was selected first string All-Conference after BYU won the Conference Championship in 1948. In later years he developed a love for tennis and built a tennis court in our backyard. My father inspired my passion for living a healthy lifestyle and fitness.
When I was seven years old I met my Great Grandfather (Amasa Clark) for the first and only time. He was about 95 years old and the family had just gifted him a new bicycle which he rode in the BYU Homecoming Parade one year. When I was standing in the living room of his little home in Farmington, Utah I noticed several large river rocks next to his sofa. Being a curious lad I asked him, “Grandpa, why do you have rocks next to your sofa?”. His answer, “I work out with those.” That made a huge impression on me then and that memory continues to motivate me today.
My father often took me and my brothers to Dodger games. Being cost conscious, and not wanting to pay the high cost of the concessions at the ballpark, he would typically stop at the neighborhood shopping center and tell me and my brothers to jump out and buy treats for the game at Savon Drug Store. My brothers did just that, returning to the car with bags full of their favorite candy. I, on the other hand, would go next door to the grocery store and buy an apple, banana, red grapes and and orange. I was just that kind of kid, always thinking about health and making healthy choices. I know…I was a little “different”. I still am today…
One of the biggest influences that changed my life and my lifestyle for the rest of my life was the movie “Rocky”. Getting Strong Now and Eye of the Tiger! I was inspired and motivated to become a greater version of myself. Since that inspiration I have made health and fitness a “lifestyle”.
I now find myself turning 73 and my motivation and desire for good health, fitness and healthy longevity is as strong today as it was when I was inspired by the movie Rocky (Yo Adrian!). I firmly believe that if we eat right, monitor our healthy weight, exercise, supplement, and follow many of the guidelines outlined in the book “Young Forever” by Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D. (Founder and Senior Advisor for the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine) that we can not only manage our health but extend our healthy lifespan.
