A Song to Which We Listen

“There are moments in our lives, there are moments in a day, when we seem to see beyond the usual—become clairvoyant. We reach then into reality. Such are the moments of our greatest happiness. Such are the moments of our greatest wisdom.

At such times there is a song going on within us, a song to which we listen. It fills us with surprise. We marvel at it. We would continue to hear it. But few are capable of holding themselves in the state of listening to their own song. Intellectuality steps in and as the song within us is of the utmost sensitiveness, it retires in the presence of the cold, material intellect…and we fall back and become our ordinary selves. Yet we live in the memory of these songs which in moments of intellectual inadvertence have been possible to us. They are the pinnacles of our experience and it is the desire to express these intimate sensations, this song from within, which motivates the masters of all art.”

“The Art Spirit” | Robert Henri

As an artist this quote resonates with me but I also feel that it describes those moments that we are in tune with and listening to the Holy Spirit.

Read it again and think of it in that light.

I was inspired to paint this violin after listening to Beethoven’s Violin Concerto (I was instilled with a love of music as part of the legacy of love for art and music that my grandfather left for me).  Listening to this Concerto I felt a oneness with the Spirit.  The violin in its case is a beautiful work of craftsmanship but in the hands of a skilled musician it fulfills the purpose of its creation.  Only when we put ourselves in the hands of our Creator can we fulfill the purpose of our creation.

I believe that each and every one of us has the capacity to become one with the Spirit…to receive personal revelation.  These moments are the pinnacles of our experience and, I believe, it is in these moments that we reach into reality.  The reality of who we are and why we are here.  Such are the moments of our greatest happiness.  Such are the moments of our greatest wisdom.

We are endowed by God with limitless potential but it is up to us to reach beyond the invisible boundaries that we set for ourselves and to seek his guiding hand in all that we do.

With humility and love.  The greatest commandment.
