The Obesity Crisis

Obesity is a chronic condition that increases the risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers.

The prevalence of obesity among adults was 40.3% during August 2021–August 2023. The prevalence was 39.2% in men and 41.3% in women.

No significant differences between men and women were seen overall or in any age group.

The prevalence of obesity in adults ages 40–59 was 46.4%, which was higher than the prevalence in adults ages 20–39 (35.5%) and 60 and older (38.9%). This pattern was seen in both men and women.

People who are overweight or obese, compared to those with healthy weight are at risk for many serious diseases and health conditions.
